Colin Cowherd says U.S. Soccer’s PAY-TO-PLAY system is STILL BEHIND the world’s best academies
Colin Cowherd breaks down why the World Cup exposed America’s development gap, why Christian Pulisic and the U.S. got embarrassed by Belgium, and why Morocco’s academy pipeline is putting our system to shame.

The world cup never has and never will NEED the usa. Cmon stop your delusions of grandeur 😂😂😂😂 u are not good at football
You Americans may be well meaning but that’s what makes you disconnect from the rest of the world. You have to use the S word rather than football and that is your failing
top 18? Give your head a wobble mate.
I love how you’re blaming pay to play. Of course it’s problematic – maybe even morally wrong. But that’s not the root cause of our inferior Soccer competitiveness. It’s because we have four other sports – or at least three – that we love Moore. 3 to 4 other sports that were farm or passionate about. 3 to 4 other sports that we follow. 3 to 4 other sports that we grow up playing. 3 to 4 other sports that are central to our culture. Becoming good at Soccer requires a major culture change. And that change will never ever EVER happen
Usa lost because trump got his mate to rescind baloguns red card. And that pissed off the belgians. Usa should NOT have played balogun.. 😊
As long as football is pay to play in the US you're not catching up with the top 15-20 football countries. You may occasionally beat one of them but to be consistently competitive you cant price out millions of potential talents from playing
soccer really sucks as a spectator, to me it's like golf, fun to play but boring to watch.
No feeder system in the US from the very bottom to the top . Also you've got to stop excluding those who can't afford pay to play..It's going to be a long process..
Americans, America and their govt has a tremendous talent of making everything great becomes expensive. Do t trust me!! Hers some of the examples. Wanna play football ⚽ let's make it pay to play, cars are getting expensive and Tesla is nowhere near or close to the BYD!? Impose export traiff, people can't afford healthcare let's make it super expensive and difficult loophole. I mean come on consumerism should have a limit 🧐🧐🧐🤔🤷
I am an expat Brit living in Canada. When I first came to Canada, there was not a lot going on in terms of football (soccer). Now, 17 years later, there are more kids signed up in football programs than hockey. There is now also both a mens and women's professional Canadian Premier league. Stop pay to play. If you look at UK and European elite players, most were brought up in working class families who didn't or couldn't afford to go to college. Your system is missing kids who could become world class if given a chance to come through a proper academy system. The USA has many communities from all over the world whos most popular sport is football and especially South America. They are not represented enough in the national team.
Ah bullshit lol. Every country has pay to play.
You haven’t gotten better you only think that because your at
Qualifying and group stage is the easiest.. that’s why you always goto the WC thinking you are better than you are… after 30 years you still don’t have academies. Participation is not what you need you need intelligence about the game and aptitude.. America can’t develop players because you don’t have an infrastructure in place to develop players… division 1 soccer will not develop players… you seem to think that cutting corners on development will help you catch nations with 100 years of experience, that is just shear arrogance and ignorance. The fact that you think some “exciting” 16 yo from “the MLS “ will matter tells you all you need to know about how you think… Yamal is 18 but he plays for one of the best clubs on the planet this American kid plays in the MLS… and I will leave it there.. until the USA stops kidding itself about “football” you will continue to get embarrassed by the footballing nations of the world.. might also help if you understand the difference between the “soccer” you play and the “football” that destroys your weak “soccer” vs Belgium.
At the earliest levels in the US – dad coaches work to get their own kids fame and scholarships even when they’re not the best. The US can’t win a World Cup under those conditions.
Colin makes a lot of comments on what he thinks are good traits for a Francize QB. Christian Pulisic is not the player you think he is. He is only good in a supporting roll. The team plays better more often without him, then with him. We should not be building the Team around in. In truth, US Soccer has a history (men and women) of putting certain Sponsored players on the Roster and Pulisic is one of those.
18th best team he says…. lol.
If the US wants to compete globally, we need to embed pick-up soccer into our culture. France has 5–10x more open-access neighborhood courts per capita than the US. While we build massive, locked sports complexes that require paid league permits, France builds free, unreserved "city stades" right in their neighborhoods. Access drives excellence! ⚽🇺🇸
This system has continued to fail over decades, but USSF, as horrible as they are, continue to do it. This has been complained about since the 90s. And remember – New York Cosmos were selling out Giants Stadium well before Jets and Giants thought about it. Freddie Adu? 😂
Could care less what Colin cowherd has to say about football – he knows absolutely nothing about the game and proves it regularly. Amazing that these sports pundits believe they are the source of all information about all sports
Not disagreeing, just curious. If pay to play is bad then why is the USWNT the most successful WNT in history?
If you had a promotion and relegation pyramid it would set itself up.
Why is the soccer pay-to-play system failing when it works for football, basketball, and baseball? They all cost roughly the same.
A lot of countries are reticent to put on the WC now it has ballooned to 48 teams. Saudi Arabia will likely be awarded the 2034 WC because no one else wants it. So it will become an exercise in sports-washing countries willing to throw money at putting on an event that will bring prestige, but will be expensive. Or be the US and price gouge everyone. It is a similar situation to the Olympics.
Colin knows very little about soccer.
Kids as young as 4 can be scouted by clubs in England, and go through the youth system and still not play for a team. That's how much competition there is.
NOW The American public are showing that you understand football. When you win a game (dont worry if the other team are any good or not) you go bezerk and know you are definitely winning the world cup. And when you come up against a more talented and experienced team and lose (again you must ignore these factors) the team is rubbish and should all be replaced, sack the manager and replace the administrators the sky has fallen! This is football fandom, everything is as it should be.
Jesus is King
tradeoff is simple . you're 16 or 17 , you're good , they send you to play with the adults … in a top league . even if you are good in a youth team the first team might call you up to play with them !
Maybe if you started calling it what it is: football.
US football, where you pick up the ball with your hands is NOT football.
Pay to play isn’t failing pulisic, pay to play created him. Pulisic is a solid player at club level, but all his faults are symptomatic of what he is; an upper middle class kid from the suburbs who is mentally and physically fragile.
