Canadian Olympic Committee explores appealing FIFA stripping soccer team of 6 points

FIFA has announced it will deduct six points from Canada’s national women’s soccer team at the Paris Olympics following this week’s drone soccer scandal.

Along with the points, the organization announced head coach Bev Priestman has been suspended from all soccer activities for one year and that the Canadian Soccer Federation will face a fine of $226,000.

In a statement following the sanctions, Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue said Canada Soccer is disappointed with the impact of the decision on the athletes, and they are now exploring appeal options.

Crystal Goomansingh explains.

  1. What a joke! “violations of the principles of fair play”! Men are boxing women, no principles of fair play there. They cheated, now they gotta take their lumps.

  2. As a Canadian, I'm not disappointed in the decision. I am disappointed in the Canadian staff that were so idiotic to think it was a good idea. Those individuals deserve to be banned from any soccer organization permanently and never allowed to represent Canada on any international or domestic stage.

  3. Canada is only sorry they got caught. The team is appealing the decision to deduct the points, so they are not in any way making serious amends. Yes, they fired the coach, but thought they were just going to continue on playing on an even field through to a medal.

Sorry, life doesn't work that way.

  4. Embassy, Canada is an embassy on world stage… From sports to government.. Canada is safe on terrorists crimes etc .. ban Olympics for mocking Jesus Christ, Christina's

  5. FIFA and Olympics committee took dirty bloody money from russians, chineese, and other garbage!!!!! And this clowns will judge our teams!!!!! Come on!!!! The Nation will stand together with our ladies and men who are fighting for our flag, for our Spirit and Values!!!!! Together we will beat corrupt commetes and FIFA-mafia! Only Canada! Only Victory!!!!

  6. soccer isn't even a real sport. it's all drama all the time on and off the field. NO taxpayer money should funnel to criminals in Hockey Canada, Soccer Canada or any other sport governing body intent on cheating, raping, covering up crimes everyday citizens would be prosecuted for.

  7. FIFA’s decision has ignored the athletes’ rights and their efforts. I would like to know if the athletes have made no mistakes themselves and why they are subject to biased and unequal competition. It’s management problem. FIFA can punish the team manager and coaches but must be fair to innocent players who have spent years of hard work and training to get there!!!

  8. Not only is it an unfair advantage in terms of tactics, set pieces, formation etc., it is also an invasion of privacy. Nobody wants to be surveilled by a camera when we're doing whatever it is we are doing, be it practice on a football pitch or scratching our balls in our backyard. Both which can occur anyway.
I've lived in Canada, and I do not think this represents the country or their integrity as a whole. Own up to it, get real with it, move on and all will be well in the end.

  9. Sorry, folks, this business of automatic bail and easy release only applies in Canada. Elsewhere: don't do the crime if you can't do the time. LMAO.

  10. FIFA went easy on canada. They should ALL have been sent home. Players, officials and coaches. AND stripped of their 2021 gold medal. I feel sorry for new zealand. They should have been awarded a 3 – 0 win over canada.

  11. Shame on you Canada, this stunt is so Donald Trumpish…Women's soccer team should be disqualified entirely. Any win or medal would be tarnished and not internationally respected.

  12. I'm Canadian and they should consider themselves lucky their Olympic journey is even allowed to continue, don't contest the decision and take the L and let the girls play, I know if I was on the committee they would of been sent packing home instead with a disqualified result attached.

  13. I still don't get why why doing this? what is there to gain from spying other team's training? watching people play 3 vs 3 , taking corners, running around the cones?

  14. 6 points deduction is different than 2 loss , because no other team would be added these 6 points. If Canada win the last 2 games, we will have 3 points with at least +3 in goal differences. Being in a group with France, and Canada, it's very hard for Newzealand or Colombia to finish the group stage with more than 3 points (when they beat each other). Until then, with 2 loss againts France and Canada, they end up with at least -2 in goal different. With that said, They must have 5-0 win againt each other to have a +3 GD to at least equal ours. Even so, head-to-head record is a win for canada.

all we have to do is beat France this evening . But a draw isn't too bad if neither NZL and Colombia walk out with 3 points. All left for us to do is beat Colombia in the final game of the group stage. While waiting for France to at least draw NZL which isn't too hard. If NZL beats France, then we'll advance with NZL.

  15. Everybody did it. What about the (insert here). Rationale demonstrates the moral rot permeating a country whose only economic activity the last 25 years has been flipping houses to terrorists, child sex traffickers and slave labor kingpins.

  16. Canada is a joke politically, as an ally and now their sports programs mirror the government. What a fall from grace. This country has eroded into a banana republic. You have to feel for the athletes who play under a corrupt organization.
