Canada women’s soccer coach suspended for drone-spying scandal

Canada women’s soccer coach Bev Priestman was suspended and removed from the team for the Paris Olympics in the wake of a drone-spying scandal Friday, and the head of Canada Soccer said he was investigating a potential “systemic ethical shortcoming.”

Earlier in the day, Canadian Olympic Committee chief executive David Shoemaker told reporters in Paris that Priestman was likely aware that drones were used to spy on New Zealand’s practices. Priestman has denied the allegations.

  1. Despite the 6 point deduction, a win v. Columbia and the ladies will finish 2nd in the group.
And if France were to lose… first in the group!!!
A good team with an idiot manager. Good riddance to Priestman!

  2. Taking their lessons from canada's corrupt Prime Minister who proves you can do crap that should end you up in jail – yet there he is!! Fool has ruined Canada

  3. The worst Olympic shooting team in France was the USA, but the 2024 Gold South Korea shooter Ban Hyojin Teenager wins Olympic shooting gold by a fraction of a point.
the Silver Medal winner is China …

It's too bad a Gun Culture nation can't win Olympic Shooting.
USA Team will now put in a compliant about Self-Healing Targets.

CHÂTEAUROUX, France — Teenage South Korea shooter Ban Hyojin found out just how fine the winning margin in her sport can be as she won an Olympic gold medal by one-tenth of a point on Monday.

The 16-year-old Ban beat 17-year-old Huang Yuting of China to the gold medal by 0.1 in a shoot-off after they were tied on 251.8 points from 22 shots, a score that had given both an Olympic record.

When she realized she'd won the gold, Ban looked up to the ceiling and took a deep breath before securing her rifle. She seemed to be shaking with emotion as she hugged her coach and wiped away tears while posing with her fellow medalists.

“At this young age, I felt a lot of pressure coming to France without my family and being alone," she said. "But after the match I saw my fellow countrypeople cheering for me and I felt like ‘finally.’"

Ban might have felt like she'd lost the gold medal after having a comparatively comfortable lead of 1.3 points with two shots to go. All but one of her shots until then had scored at least 10 points of a possible 10.9, but she then shot 9.9 and 9.6 to allow Huang to close the gap and force the tiebreaker shoot-off. Ban scored 10.4 to win that to Huang's 10.3.

Huang won her second medal of the Paris Games after she and teammate Sheng Lihao won the 10-meter mixed team air rifle on Saturday, the first gold medal awarded in any sport at the 2024 Olympics.

Switzerland's Audrey Gogniat took the bronze medal Monday when she was eliminated on 230.3. Sagen Maddalena was fourth for the United States, which is yet to win a shooting medal in the competition.

Sheng won his second gold of the Paris Games and China's third in shooting with victory in the men's 10-meter air rifle. Sheng set an Olympic-record score of 252.02 to beat Sweden's Victor Lindgren by .8 of a point in the final. Bronze went to Miran Maricic of Croatia.

Sheng became the first athlete in any sport to win two gold medals at the 2024 Olympics.

  4. I’m kind of surprised that since that guy got suspended, that the team would even be allowed to go on. Considering they sure pile on Russia every year for infractions.

  5. Bev, Bev, Bev if you knew then you are what one calls one , a cheat . If you did not it was your job to know , end of story there is no excuse. . Have a happy life as an unemployed coach

  6. I assume that is against the rules? This news report was incomplete. It did not say exactly what rule was broken. Usually you can go watch the other team practice, but I assume this was a closed practice. This news report is not very informative. Regardless, ethically it sounds just wrong, whether there is a rule against it or not.

  7. Completely ashamed of our Canadian coach. She has let down her team and destroyed our reputations. She should never be allowed to coach an Olympic team again. Disgraceful.

  8. American football(NFL) coaching legend Chuck Noll of the Pittsburgh Steelers was once given the opposing teams playbook. ( Kinda paraphrasing here)
In a team meeting he threw it in the trash
Said he wasn't concerned about what his opponent was going to do because if we execute like we prepared we will win.

  9. As a Canadian who isn't a huge fan of soccer but is a big fan of the Olympics I'd just like to say to any fans of competing countries who may read this that I'm deeply ashamed of my country for this scandal and I offer my most sincere apologies. This IS. NOT. what our country stands for.
