People in the comments judging the golden ball just from UCL goals is ridiculous.
It is an accumulation of performance (MVPs, eye test), stats (not only goals as you would like), value to the team and trophies in 2021 and actually mostly during 20-21 season.
1. Performance wise Messi from January to July was unmatched. Barcelona was bad so he did not go through the UCL but that does not mean the world. Yes Messi after the summer dropped his performance but not much of that time mattered in the voting process. Plus Messi has the most MVPs this year.
2. Stats wise Lewa comes very big in goals but a little behind in everything else. He still edges Messi though with 73 goal contributions to Messi's 58.
3. Value to the team: Here Lewa and Messi are close but especially during 20-21 Messi was more valuable to a very bad Barca team. Lewa was incredible but let's be real Bayern would win Bundesliga even without him.
4. Lastly, trophies. Lewa has Bundesliga and German Super Cup. 2 very easy trophies for Bayern. Messi has Copa del Rey which for this Barca team was an accomplishment. And then his major trophy, Copa America. A historical feat since it is his first international trophy and Argentina's first in 28 years. And not only that but his performance was unmatched. Top scorer, provider and player all in once. Something unheard of in history. Plus they won it in Brazil. Plus Argentina holds the best unbeaten record in the world with 27 games.
So conclusion. It is close but still Messi.
