  1. My favorite was 1978 beautiful calcio mostly a Juve squad the only team to defeat Argentina and only lost to long range once in a lifetime shots. Second was 1990 again should have won WC but for a Zenga miscue. Third 1982 Fourth 1970 Fifth 2006 2020 sixth 2002 seventh

  2. He probably wanted to put that 94 team in 2nd. They had Zola too who was harshly red carded. He IMO was the best player at the time amongst Baggio with the unlucky pen. In my mind Italy have 6 world cups and brazil with 3.

  3. The 94, 98, and 2002 squads had World class defenders and forwards. We had industrial players in midfield (Albertini, Dino Baggio, Tomassi, Cristiano Zanetti, Gattuso, Di Biaggio.) who were good to very good, but not great. We often got outplayed because of this – we were extremely lucky to get a draw with Mexico in 2002 and qualify for the last 16. Had Pirlo, who was 23 and doing great for the under 21's, and Brescia, been selected, as well as Baggio, who was still magnificent at the age of 35, been called up, then I would say that the 2002 squad was the best.

    My favourite Italian team, the one which played the best football and had the best balance was the 1990 team. Zenga; Bergomi, Ferri, Baresi, Maldini; Donadoni, De Napoli, Giannini, Berti; Baggio, Schillaci. I believe this team would have won had the coach not dropped Baggio (and ruined the teams rhythm) for the semi-final against Argentina.

    The 1982 team, and squad, was also excellent. One of the most underrated World Cup Champions. They get criminally overlooked and disparaged because that Brazil team didn't win the tournament, a team which couldn't defend to save their lives. To beat Brazil, Argentina, a very good Polish side, and West Germany was a great achievement.

  4. I mean, it is a ranking of Italian squads, which doesn’t rank high among other international squads. “Talent in the front” for the 2006 squad?!? Luca Toni is really all you got!!? LMAO

  5. What about Italia for UEFA Euro 2000? They got to the final vs. France and the golden goal per ET came into play here for the winner. Italia was missing Christian Vieri in both Euro 2000 and WC 2006. I think WC 2002 was the best squad. Allegedly they were cheated by FIFA with match fixing, but so was Spain's selection as well.

  6. All those teams except for 2002, won/lost by PK shootouts. Johan Cruyff was right "Italians can not beat us, but we can certainly lose against them.". It always goes to shootouts lol.

  7. Football is fun because it's not decided on paper right? You need a right system that fits all the player you have, maximizing their value. From this perspective, the result and the actual game process speak best. 2006 is easily NO.1 cuz it was so balanced.

    fun fact: that Italy squad is the most valuable team of the 32 teams in that world cup, even higher than Brazil, England. That's because so many players are at their prime age, the right balance of experience and fitness.

    I know 2021 squad is not strong on pager compared to other teams, but in terms of the team system and balance, it's easily TOP 3. Their win is not just lucky, that team still holds the longest unbeaten run record of national teams, for a good reason. If anyone remembers, two games in Euro 2020 (two 3-0 against Turkey and Switzerland), everyone was saying Italy was playing the most enjoyable games,. They got experienced defenders, best goalkeeper, solid mid field, speed (Spinazzola) and rising attacker star (Chiesa), everyone played so well and comfortable in that 4-3-3 system.

    On the opposite, squad 2002 is a good example of great players on paper but not so good coach and imbalanced. There were legendary defenders and attackers in that field, but mid field was not strong enough, who's the regista? They didn't deserve to be eliminated at 16 for sure, but they struggled at group stage too, and also the similar squad failed 2004 Euro too. Speaking of a team, though 2002 could be best on paper, they should be NO.5 in this list

  8. 2002 was the best team – “weird way”, as Del Piero said is IMHO an euphemism for “scandalous referee”, who was arrested some years after that infamous match for heroin smuggling in New York. Spain had something to say about that 2002 world cup too.

    My rank is:

    1) 2002 (Totti, Vieri, Del Piero, Buffon, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta, Montella were in their prime; Maldini was still Maldini!);

    2) 1994 (Baggio, Albertini, Maldini, Pagliuca, Casiraghi, Zola in their prime; Baresi in his last great season, Donadoni old, ma still good);

    3) 2006 (It’s the 2002 team plus prime Pirlo and with Luca Toni instead of Vieri)

    4) 1998 (if that Baggio’s volee against France went in, that team could have won the World Cup);

    5) 2021 was the worst team on the list in terms of talent. The only great player was Donnarumma.

  9. The crazy thing is that European countries, like Italy for example, they risk again to no qualify for World Cup, despite having 15 points on 18 aviable…

    I mean, you win 5 matches on 6 and you have to have these play-off between the second placed teams ?

    While in the other continents, you see some terrible teams qualifying with 4 or 5 points ?
    This is the real problem….

    The 8rd European team is waaaaaay better than the 8rd team of Asia, Africa, America etc etc… or even better than the 4/5/6/7rd for that matter
