  1. At 7, my intention to play football is just hang out wiyh friends and having fun. The most common rules in the game is the last team score win the game. Nobody pushes us to win anything. The desire to win come naturally

  2. Pay to play is even a bigger issue because club soccer programs are funded by the parents and there's a lot of talent that's not looked at because they can't afford the high cost of club soccer programs.

  3. Why do you guys keep avoiding the real issue? Promotion, relegation. Every other country has a proven method to develop talent. The MLS pay to play style in the U.S doesnโ€™t work

  4. No Landon, the issue is PAY FOR PLAY…. Crazy soccer fees for the academy levels…. only rich and well off financially families pay their kids on these teams… not on these teams for the talent, on kids are on American ACADEMY TEAMS because of their parents dollars!๐Ÿค‘

  5. Absolutely. And it manifests itself tactically. Playing against those coaches lets you teach how to use their aggression against them. Things as simple as give and go. You can teach your group โ€œYou WANT them rushing at you. Use that. Work as a team!โ€ Just have to calm your kidsโ€™ parents down sometimes.

  6. I think he is wrong on this one, at least partially. The issue is not just wanting to win but how you go about it to win. Most countries have street ball where all of the kids play and they play to win, the difference is that they do not have a coach telling them what to do and how to do it. They simply start by mimicking and then simply practicing to be better and better.

  7. I have always put development over results over 30 years of coaching, but thatโ€™s youth soccer. At the professional level, results are all that matters. You donโ€™t get style points and the best system and style is the one least reliant on the technical and tactical quality of the players. Itโ€™s time to abandon emulating foreign play and adopt a purely American style, whatever it is.

  8. Great take, every level outside of collegiate and semi-pro and pro should be about development, even in high school, bigger fish to fry than a low level 15 year old tournament

  9. my son is 6 yr old and love soccer of money issue i cant put him in a club. I will take him somwhere else , europe or somwhere. I cant afford here and the attitude is not there..

  10. Totally disagree. Usa Soccer biggest problem is over coaching and making soccer to regiment based not under coaching as Donovan is saying. Soccer in other countries is more based on creativity and a almost artistic / dance l๐Ÿ˜‚ike approach to the game. Especially offensivley . Not dumb robotic drills coaches make you do. This is why Usa mens soccer never produces good ball handlers and strikers and is onle e er good at defense and goaltending. And scores most of its goals on set pieces and counter attacks. Plus its good to teach kids in all sports about dealing with winning and losing the right way. A competitive drive and teaching kids you play to win the game is important in any sport. Donovan is wrong on his take.

  11. American soccer from age 4-10 should only play in 4v4 games. Each week, they should play at least 2 games outside of practice. No long-distance games or tournament

  12. 100% agree! I still remember parents question why I didn't play only the players that could win our Final game. I wanted all my players to play and learn. And I hate the pay to play mentality in youth soccer.

  13. The problem is making a development system that is available for all and not just the rich or those who can connect with money. When my three played club soccer 15 years ago if our team didn't have a rich parent really involved in our club, my sons would've never played. It just cost too much.

  14. Always makes me laugh how for such a patriotic nation, who love to wave their flag and sing their anthem America stubbornly sticks with sports that donโ€™t actually reflect how good they are against the rest of the world. (Other then the Olympics) but thatโ€™s pay to play on steroids

  15. IMO it's bigger though it's the AAU/club structure. With basketball I see kids that are 15-16 playing against seventh graders. Some parents holding back their kid for the sake of a sport. Some programs it's not about helping the kids improve, get better, etc. And those are the programs you stay away from.
