A Brief History of the Soccer Ball

Amidst the evolution of the game, the soccer ball has gone through many developments. Years before the Zidanes and Maradonas we cherish, people enjoyed kicking things that ranged from elasticized balls by South American Indians, human heads or skulls in medieval times, cow bladders or just stitched-up cloth a bit later on. Prior to the manufacturing of rubber, these ‘so-called’ balls would sometimes depend on the size and shape of the objects used, making the ‘roll’ of the ball so unpredictable until leather provided better shape retention.

Soccer Field Positions

Whereas a running back, wide receiver, cornerback or linebacker can run wildly depending on play tactics, soccer players are evaluated based on their ability to stick to their positions as opposing coaches are on the constant lookout to take advantage of any gaps or failures to cover assigned field zones. A strict rule is that when on defense, “left” side players must stay on the left side of the field, while their compatriots on the “right” do the same on their end.
