England last won the Cup in 1966 and there has never been a better opportunity to repeat this achievement than in 2010. A popular destination for holiday makers and ex-pats alike, South Africa provides glorious weather and a favourable exchange rate. As at any tournament there will be great support for the England side, but this tournament could be extra special.

Just in case anyone was a little confused or not up to date with major international competitions, there is a little tournament called the World Cup that is going on. This international competition happens every four years, and gives the best national teams the opportunity to participate in a soccer tournament that names the best in the world.

Every four years the world stops to watch one game loved by all, the FIFA World Cup. Started as a tradition in 1930 pitting the best football clubs in the world against one another, the World Cup has grown to be the most watched sporting event in the world.

The World Cup is moving into the knockout stage now which together with joy and thrill is the deadly penalty. This do-or-die way of deciding the winner of the match has created some of the most memorable moments in World Cup’s history, and many of the big stars have tasted the bitter feeling of failing the shootout including Diego Maradona, Michel Platini and David Beckham. In contrast to 5-time champions Brazil who have featured in every World Cup, this is only Chile’s 8th appearance, and their 3rd entry to the 2nd round.

Holland take on Slovakia at Durban on Tuesday in a match that nobody could have predicted would take place. Yet this unlikely pairing in the round of 16 was made possible by a 3-2 defeat of the defending champions, Italy, delivered by one of the weakest European teams in the fray, in Slovakia.

It is about time FIFA starts using replay in football matches, why do teams who have worked so hard to make it to the World Cup must suffer because of a poor decision of a referee? Why do fans who spend so much time and money to watch their favorite team must suffer because a referee wants to be the focus of the game?
