Jamie Carragher on why Newcastle should NOT sack Rafa Benitez | MNF

Jamie Carragher says Newcastle should not sack Rafa Benitez despite sitting bottom of the Premier League, and both he and Graeme Souness believe they will narrowly avoid relegation.

Newcastle have gained just two points from their first nine games, though have faced five of last season’s top six sides, with simpler fixtures to come.

Newcastle were out-spent by the majority of the Premier League in the summer having finished 10th under Benitez last season, but Carragher, who played under the Spaniard at Liverpool, says the 58-year-old has a calmness which will help in this pressured situation.

  1. Wrong Newcastle were not in a dig fight right until the end. But Newcastle Rafa was the main reason for that. Now he has left, and we will really see how good he is. What is Mike Ashley doing?

  2. You need the quality players to win. Even the top managers spend big. A bad manager can win with good players- look at Alan Pardew at Newcastle who had good players at the time. But a good manager can never win with bad players

  3. If Pardew/McClaren/Carver/Kinnear/Souness/Allardyce had 2 points from 9 games they would be burning SJP down to get them sacked. Pardew got more points per game (while managing way more games) than Rafa while spending less money. Rafa is a dinosaur and is the problem. Newcastle are better than Cardiff, Huddersfield and Brighton at least and to not point up at least a point against Brighton at home is criminal

  4. Let's say Fulham go on a bad run the manager gets sacked wouldn't rafa fit Fulham he would have financial backing and would get the best out of players.

  5. No Rafa needs to sack Newcastle, it’s a shame a manger of his quality is being made to look like a bum, he deserves much better than what they are giving him to work with

  6. Rafa will always will be a Legend for us Liverpool fans,I honestly feel sorry for him at Newcastle he must be stressed out big time even your Legend Shearer pissed off how the clubs going your Owner a Prick not buying when clearly obvious you need new players Carragher right Rafa shouldn't get Sacked he's tried his best at Newcastle but I do think he will leave if the owner don't fix this problem been long time over due.

  7. It simply looks that Mike Ashley wants to be relegated get those parachute payments. Then get promoted again getting the rewards that comes with that. Doing this allows him to not really spend any money. I feel for the club and the fans. Especially after that interview he did with sky.

  8. How dare Ashley sack Rafa ? The fact that he is still the manager is the only reason why the fans still support the team..or I dare say don't attack Ashley
I am a Liverpool fan, and I feel absolutely gutted for him. The situation was the same at Liverpool, with Hicks and Gillet at helm.

  9. The only person who needs to be shown the door is Mike Ashley. He’s such a frustrating figure!….he won’t provide sufficient funds, he won’t sell the club.

  10. If anyone other than rafa was here at Newcastle they wouldn't be in the premier league right now.
Newcastle is lucky to have rafa as their manager when you look at their squad last season they have no qulity in the squad to finish in Top 10 yet they did and mike ashely did give them a penny in the transfer window.

  11. I disagree with Graeme Souness here. Newcastle fans aren't daft. They know that Rafa is working miracles under Mike Ashley's negligent stewardship, and they have grown accustomed to the fact that the owner has no footballing ambitions and is all about bleeding the club for what it is worth. This should take any real pressure off the players AND Rafa as expectancies are so quite rightfully low. All ire therefor will justifiably be aimed at Ashley who is singlehandedly responsible for the downturn in footballing fortunes up there. Ashley out, Rafa in

  12. Does my tits in when people continue to lump Leicester in with the likes of Bournemouth or Southampton. Give them the credit they deserve as not so distant Premier league champions and still a dangerous outfit despite having lost Kante and Mahrez ffs!

  13. I feel sorry for rafa because he is a top class coach managing a bang average team and he is not being backed financially which is a real shame a club like Newcastle!
