With the opening weekend done and dusted, Premier League clubs now need to sit down and start drafting long haul battle plans and tactics, because the Premiership is a marathon and not a sprint. Liverpool have a few lessons to draw from their opening match against Arsenal.

This week’s super match will take place on Sunday as Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge to take on champions Chelsea in the eighth round of games, in the ongoing Premier League. Last week, both teams had similar stories to tell. They lost for the first time, this Premiership season, and won their respective Champions League games. Chelsea beat Marseille, at home at Stamford Bridge, while Arsenal prevailed over FK Partizan, away, in Belgrade, Slovakia.

Chelsea pride themselves in being global entertainers more than anything else. And more than anything else, the Premier League champions would like the tag of European champions, in keeping with their multi-national self-image. Especially the European Cup title that has eluded them. In the last four years, Chelsea have entered one Champions League final and two semi-finals, and have returned empty handed. This year could be the last opportunity for the core members of the team that made this possible.

Frenchman Arsene Wenger has cemented his reputation as Arsenal’s most successful manager after Herbert Chapman. He is considered as one of the most influential men in the Premier League. Among its achievements, the club boasts 13 consecutive seasons played in the Champions League. But Wenger’s squad is starved of a championship win. The last trophy Arsenal won was the 2005 FA Cup. The last time the Gunners won the Premier League was in 2004.

Arsenal take on Blackpool on Saturday, August 21, in what will be their second match of the Premiership. Blackpool have not played against Arsenal since March 1971. Despite the difference in quality of the rival teams, Wenger will be anxious to bank four points from the game, in order to stay in contention for the Premier League title.

Chelsea’s defence of their title begins with a match against newly promoted West Bromwich Albion, at Stamford Bridge. Given the quality of opposition, the Blues will be counting on recording their ninth successive opening match victory. They would also look for a big margin of victory, needing to prove a point or two after their loss to Manchester United in the Community Shield game, the traditional curtain rasier to the season.

Wigan had the worst of starts to their Premiership campaign, losing by big margins in home matches to newbies Blackpool and champions Chelsea. But thereafter, they have turned things around, for which no small credit is due to manager Roberto Martinez. At 17th place, Wolves are just one rung above the Latics on the points table. Mick McCarthy’s squad began relatively well, with five points garnered from their first three matches of the Premiership season. The three losses that followed in as many matches have seen Wolves plummet down the ranks to join in a relegation battle.
