Tony Meola will go down as not only one of the greatest American goalkeepers, but one of the best American players of all time.
Meola burst onto the MLS scene at the league’s birth in 1996, starring in goal for the New York Metrostars. He made 90 appearances from 1996-1998 and led the league in shutouts with nine in its inaugural season.
After the 1998 season, Meola was traded to the Kansas City Wizards where his success continued. In 2000, Meola had a career year in which he swept nearly every honor available. In addition to winning the league’s Most Valuable Player award and Goalkeeper of the Year, he proved a dominant force between the pipes for KC on their road to winning the 2000 MLS Cup. He led the league with 16 clean sheets and was named MLS Cup MVP.
After an injury kept Meola out of goalkeeping duty following the 2004 season, he was re-acquired by the Metrostars (now the New York Red Bulls) in June 2005. Meola was named to the MLS All-Time Best XI following the 2005 season, and he would make 35 appearances for New York from 2005-2006 before leaving MLS for good in 2007.

So incredibly sloppy. This is the worst best of I’ve ever watched. I liked him, and remembered him being a lot better
It's no wonder he got his own video game!
Well deserved!!!
Tony Meola, Alexis Lalas my favorite players from TEAM 🇺🇸
Meola is the best goalkeeper of USA, of all times, better than Howard, Keller, Guzan, Friedel,…..
He now does color commentary for the Chicago Fire
I would like to ask your opinion guys
What do you think back then when MLS teams had varies apparel sponsorship like nike or adidas? Compare to today situation with exclusive rights, which one you prefer?
Fun fact though. The UEFA competition like UCL and UEL was monpolized by adidas as their apparel or match kits providers or (such as official ball and refree uniform). Adidas provide the official UCL ball, Molten for UEL and Macron for refree uniform.
Meola was awesome
im always torn between whether it was that these players were actually great or if the rest of the player pool was not so good
A great place kicker for The San Francisco Giants. I think hes from Guatemala right.
Great goalkeeper,I remember him in the '94 cup,a legend,I'm a Meola fan 🇧🇷🇺🇲👊
I met him and he did a soccer commercial with my team. It was so cool
Tony Meola still holds the MLS record for most shutouts in one season with 16, which he set in 2000 with Kansas City Wizards.
remember when he tried out for the ny giants and failed.
If I am not wrong, he was the main keeper for the American national team in USA 94 World Cup
