SoccerCoachTV – Checking out a Random Youth Soccer Practice in Barbados.

Tonight, I strolled across the street from my hotel in Barbados and watched a random youth soccer team practicing. Here are my takeaways.

1. Field Conditions: Despite not having perfect grass or turf fields, the youth soccer players were still out there, giving their best. It’s the passion and determination that matters more than the playing surface.

2. Cricket Dominance: Cricket being the dominant sport in Barbados isn’t surprising. It’s deeply ingrained in the culture and history of the island. However, it’s heartwarming to see young soccer players pursuing their passion despite this.

3. Permanent Sidelines: The use of tar or oil to mark out sidelines is practical. It ensures longevity and prevents lines from washing away during rainy weather. Resourcefulness at its best!

4. No Pinnies: The absence of pinnies (colored scrimmage vests) during their practice scrimmage is intriguing. Not sure why they did that, but I recognized that it wasn’t all that bad. Players were challenged to scan and be aware of their teammates without the benefit of wearing the same-colored shirt. I saw this as a plus for a “one off’ activity to improve peripheral vision.

5. Having Fun: The most crucial takeaway! Soccer should always be about enjoyment, camaraderie, and the sheer joy of playing. When players are having fun, they’re more likely to improve and stay committed.
