How the Women’s World Cup 1995 Teaches About the Importance of Stretching

Although stretching is important for all soccer players, a warm up and cool down is even more important for older soccer players. To be a successful soccer team on the international level, one key is to avoid injuries. I learned this firsthand (the pre and post game routines, including lots of stretching) by observing some of the best athletes in the world, the U.S. women’s national soccer team, as they competed in the Women’s World Cup in Sweden during the summer of 1995.

Ryan Giggs – The Born Talented Soccer Player

Ryan Giggs is one of the greatest Manchester United players. Ryan was born on 29 November 1973. He spent his entire professional carrier paying for only Manchester United. He made his first appearance for the club during the 1991-1992 seasons. He is considered as one of the best talented player in the history of this club.

Olympic Influences on the World Cup

In 1908, soccer became an official event in the Summer Olympic Games, for amateur players only. However, spectators still suspected the event, planned by the Football Association which governed the sport in England, to be more of a show to promote the sport than an actual competition to be taken seriously. Since the Olympic Games would only admit amateur soccer players, in 1909, Sir Thomas Lipton introduced the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy tournament, which would be held between individual clubs representing each nation rather than national teams.

World Cup’s History of Host and Travel Conflicts

With a three week boat trip required to travel between Europe and South America – both of whose countries were vital to the competition since both happened to be considered the strongest soccer continents – the competition’s location seemed a major issue every four years. Holding the first World Cup in Uruguay had meant only four European teams would compete. When the time came for the second World Cup, in 1934, it was the South American teams that were unwilling to travel the far distance overseas to Europe, where the competition was to be held in Italy.

FIFA World Cup Background

The FIFA World Cup has taken place every four years since its first tournament in 1930 – with the exception of 1942 and 1946 due to World War II – between the senior men’s national soccer teams of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Since its inaugural tournament, the FIFA World Cup – now also known as the Soccer World Cup, the Football World Cup, or simply the World Cup – has become the most widely viewed sports championship in the world, with an even larger television audience than the Olympic Games. Since 1977 FIFA has also organized…

Arsenal FC Season Review 2010-11

Like many of the previous seasons, Arsenal displayed some beautiful football, including the defeat of Barcelona in the Champions League group stage and an emphatic Premier League victory over Chelsea. Arsenal, however, failed to win a trophy for the sixth consecutive year, and even the most faithful of fans may finally start to lose patience with their manager.

Mark Hughes – What Team Will He Manage Next?

Mark Hughes resigned from Fulham on the 2nd June 2011 after only 11 months at the club citing that “As a young, ambitious manager I wish to move on to further my experiences”. An eighth place finish in the English Premier League and qualification to the Europa League via the Fair Play League was overall not a bad finish considering they were 15th at Christmas. Does Hughes think Fulham are not a fashionable enough club unable to sign top players from around the world therefore struggling to gain a top 10 position each year? Is he hankering after the Chelsea job following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti?

Choosing the Correct Soccer Boots

A new pair of soccer boots should be tested for comfort, support and stability, and they must be flexible and have a good grip. They must provide protection against direct contact from either the ball or an opponent.

Premier League Wage Bills Soar

The Premier League of English football and the second tier of English football the Championship, have seen huge wage increases that continue to exceed increase in club revenues, the latest annual report into football finance has found. Player salaries now stand at over GBP 1.4 Billion, leaving some clubs in a precarious financial position.

Ex Premier League Players Now Playing in the MLS (Major League Soccer)

The summer transfer rumour mill is in full swing now and some big names looking for a final big payday are in the frame for a move to the USA to ply their trade within the MLS (Major League Soccer). Robert Pires, Robbie Fowler, Markus Hahnemann and Mateja Kezman are all ex Premier League players who have been rumoured to make the move. Is it good for the MLS to bring these players over on megabuck pay deals when they have clearly had their best days?

Paul Scholes Retires

Paul Scholes officially announced his retirement on the 31st May 2011 with immediate effect to take up a coaching role at Manchester United next season. Scholes will forever be regarded by the Old Trafford faithful as a legend and he is arguably one of the greatest players the Premier League has seen. Thierry Henry has previously said, “Without any doubt the best player in the Premiership has to be Scholes… He knows how to do everything.” In February of this year, one of the current best players in the world, Barcelona midfielder Xavi rated Scholes as the best player in his position in the past two decades. stating “A role model. For me, and I really mean this, he’s the best central midfielder I’ve seen in the last 15, 20 years. He’s spectacular, he has it all, the last pass, goals, he’s strong, he doesn’t lose the ball, vision. If he’d been Spanish he might have been rated more highly. Players love him.”

Sometimes You Have to Stand Up and Be Counted

When the Australian Football League started getting serious in the late 1990’s about racial vilification, I was more than a tad cynical. I was sure the powers that be were authentic in wanting to create a more hospitable culture for aboriginal players (the prominent minority at the time) but I believed the zeal was probably borne out of the desire to choose from a bigger talent pool of potential players; particularly as some of the pioneering indigenous players in Victoria like Michael Long and Nicky Winmar were so exciting to watch and contributed so much. Slowly but surely people touched…
