Kevin Parsemain converted a late penalty kick to deliver a 3-2 victory to Golden Lion of Martinique against Trinidad and Tobago’s Port of Spain in Group A of the 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Club on Wednesday night at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The result gives Golden Lion three points after two matches, while Port of Spain remain without a point through three contests.
There was no shortage of action in the first half and Golden Lion got it started very early with a goal in the 2′ to take a 1-0 lead. A miscue from the Port of Spain defense allowed Golden Lion to break and Parsemain found Thierry Catherine, who fired into net for the goal.
The lead was doubled to 2-0 in the 16′ when a ball deflected off of Port of Spain center back Robert Primus and into goal.
Port of Spain started to wake up, though, and they managed to pull a goal back before intermission when a free kick was curled into the area and Radanfah Abu Bakr was there to smack home the header to make it 2-1 in the 28′.
Port of Spain kept pushing for the equalizer and it would come in the 68′ after some hard work from Tyrone Charles to weave his way through the Golden Lion defense before feeding a pass out wide to Sedale Mc Lean, whose cross was turned into net by Golden Lion’s Samuel Mondesir for the own goal and a 2-2 scoreline.
The momentum was with the home side, as Port of Spain brought their efforts up a notch in search of a winner. Charles looked set to do it in the 80′ when he rounded Golden Lion GK Gilles Meslien, only to strike the post.
Less than a minute later it was Golden Lion on the verge of the winning goal when Alvyn Lamasine was fouled in the Port of Spain area. Parsemain stepped up to take the spot kick and powered it past veteran GK Marvin Phillip to give his side a 3-2 lead that they held until the final whistle.
