In 2008 the CONCACAF Champions League expanded to 24 teams with the winner earning a birth into the FIFA Club World Cup.
In 2011, Real Salt Lake became the first MLS club to reach the final of the expanded regional competition. After earning results in hostile environments in the knockout phase, RSL hosted the decisive second leg of the CCL final against Monterrey.
