Wild PK Sequence! Encroachment, VAR, and Two Failed Attempts

Another wild week in MLS. Andrew Wiebe and former USMNT and MLSer Charlie Davies go over the MOST controversial plays from this past weekend.

  1. “Keep the flag down. It’s good for the game when Chicharito scores” Literally that statement with the awful officiating this past week solidified that this league is a joke. It sucks because I love watching MLS and see US soccer/futbol grow, but those crappy officials have to go.

  2. I'm highly disappointed in Charlie this week. He's usually not so, well, stupid. Most people want the game called correctly; not more goals which were obtained illegally.

The PK encroachment is an old and tired argument. What is too far off the line then, Davies? Is 3 inches too little? 12 inches? The laws lay out the line (goal line) and the rules to be used to determine it. There is zero reason why judgment is needed here.

Offside is a little different b/c there is no line painted on the pitch to use, but in the end exactly the same. You do the game injustice by saying close calls should be goals. Play was allowed to continue. The AR believed the player was off. When the play was over he raised the flag. It's an excellent system. You saying it was too close to call is again coming up with some made up standard/line to use instead of that laid out in the laws (the 2nd to last defender). You assume that the AR thought it was as close as the less than ideal camera angle showed it. The AR may have though it was 2 feet off due to his angle and player movement. Is 2 feet still too close for you?

  3. I don’t know if you guys are being dumbfucks or what, but even on the live broadcast multiple times over the coverage showed and demonstrated that Frei while not “technically” or “physically” directly on the line when the ball was shot, he was directly hovering above the line when the ball was shot. The fact that u made no gesture or acknowledged that fact is sus as hell.

Almost like this show was meant to stir up controversy and to alleviate nothing.

  4. 2:01 IFAb guidelines say that if encroachment has no effect on the outcome and is not blatant the PK should not be retaken. On the first one obviously it had effect since it was saved. On the second one nobody had any effect on the attacker.

  5. I never saw the replay where Nouhou encroached a second time. Sadly Valaries second PK prob should have been taken a third time. Hate to say that as a Sounders fan.

I also agree that that foul from Atlanta United’s Guzman should have been called.

  6. For the frei second pk. The ref was right to give Seattle the ball because by law Stefan Frei had to save the ball for it to be eligible for retake. The law states that if the goalkeeper does not influence the ball aka save it then if the penalty is missed then it is not retaken. Since Portland missed the penalty and Stefan Frei didn’t save it then the encroachment of Seattle doesn’t matter

  7. At :59 Valeri’s foot is already past the penalty spot. If I am not mistaken it’s suppose to be when the foot meets the ball, not when it leaves the foot. In that case they are looking at the wrong frame.

  8. No, don't call that bullshit encroaching from a field player. It has ZERO affect on the PK. I get that you can't give the keeper too much leeway, give the field players a bit more, let's play.

  9. Gotta retake that PK. No way I could possibly focus enough to kick a ball with someone else just inside of my giant rectangle 🙄🙄🙄 that rule has to change

  10. “Keep the flag down. It’s good for the game when Chicharito scores”
…I thought unbiased officiating and fairness was good for the game but what do I know 🤷🏼‍♂️

  11. I hate when people whine about VAR. Every other big league has had in the US has had some form of instant replay for at least a decade now, 4 in for the NFL. Those close that are barely rulebreaks are part of it so stop whining. Soccer/ROTW Football needed it. Te for the game to adapt and players to become more aware of themselves.

  12. I think if you give Santos a red for that headbutt, then you also have to send the other player off as well. (Can't remember how to spell his name so I'm not gonna try) Either way I think they got that one spot on
