Back Four Defending the Box | Organising the Defensive Line 🛡️⚽

Defending the box isn’t just about winning duels—it’s about the back four moving as one unit.

This exercise starts with the ball played to one of the wingers, who launches a 6v4 attack with the objective of creating a cutback.

As the cutback is played, the back line must:
✅ Push up together
✅ Stay connected
✅ Protect the central spaces
✅ Squeeze in behind the defender who jumps out of the line

Once the first attack finishes, a second ball is immediately served from the opposite winger, forcing the defenders to reorganise and defend another attack without a break.

After several repetitions, rotate both the attacking group and the back four to maintain intensity.

In this example, the defensive line wasn’t fully connected.

The left back unnecessarily swapped positions with the left centre-back and stayed too deep inside the box. Although the team didn’t concede, the distances between defenders became too large and the line lost its organisation.

These are exactly the details this exercise is designed to improve.

Stay tuned for the next video, where I’ll show the correct execution of the same drill. 👏
