This type of challenge could have ended a player’s career. It is in no way a normal challenge: going in with studs on the ankle directly endangers the Achilles tendon, which could have ruptured, just like the ankle itself.
If such contact starts to be considered normal, then all the rules would need to be changed to suit aggressive players. That would mean no longer protecting players’ physical integrity, which is unacceptable in modern football.
The referee’s initial decision was, in my view, 100% correct, and no external intervention should have overturned it. Player safety and respect for the laws of the game must remain the priority.
As for the incident involving Messi that was not sanctioned, it is clearly a refereeing error, not an action that did not deserve punishment.
I'm USA and say that he deserved that red card. He litterly stomped on his ankle/foot without touching or near the ball, period. A very intentional, dangerous and reckless play
