Awfull combination of things for Argentina. First thing first, weather is a key factor when playing against teams aclimatized to tropical enviroments. France got a taste against Paraguay too. Them when Argentina was prep the subs, three of their players got injured at the same time (unbelievable). The pitch literally looked like a battlefield with them laying on the ground. Scaloni had to make urgency subs and that fucked up with his scheme. Cabo Verde did a great job on defense but their shots also were extremely lucky, one going down between the legs of two defenders, the other one a shot that literally belonged to a different match.
All things considered, and argentine attackers not having their best day either, Argentina dominated the entire match. This could have been a confourtable 2-0 or 3-0 under any other circunstances, but it is also good that Cabo Verde pushed Argentina's limits. They are already aware of where they stand in this tournament, taking into account Cabo Verde did not lost to Spain and Uruguay.

No Team will beat Argentina after the quality of opposition they faced in Cape Verde. This game was a brutal wake up call Argentina needed just in time for the business end of the Tournament. This game was a blessing in disguise for Argentina.

As an Argentinian, I think you're not right saying the Argentinian team underestimated this match, I've personally been a little worried coming into this game because of the "Cinderella" narrative effect and the nothing to lose attitude, you must perfectly understand what I mean here. And maybe the language barrier doesn't allow you to see the personality of our coach, Scaloni, he would never ever let himself or the team into complacency or self entitlement. Messi himself, the captain of this team, is the embodiment of modesty and sobriety.

Oh these sports analysis can be stronger.. they're hardly backed by strong football facts. The underperforming Argentina players don't underperform in isolation. Lautaro Martinez is basically playing as a defending and pressing attacker.. he can't have same effect with finishing .. Same struggle Bruno Fernandes may be having.. they're not relying on Messi, they build around Messi.. and if Messi doesn't play, they build into a different system of playing and the outcome may not be different but the goals will most likely be distributed.. they can play with wingers unlike now.

ESPN has a MISLEADING HEADLINE, THOUGH. It says Cape Verde " outplayed " Argentina. The MATCH STATS shows much better possession , much more shots at goal and on target for Argentina. Give the African team their flowers for a VALIANT effort but DON'T DIMINISH the OFFICIAL MATCH STATS separate from the 1 goal difference.
