fans first I fell sorry for not the players.they didn't do anything other then pay Southampton wages
too many pundits trying to paint a very simple issue as complex. Southampton cheated. By doing so they forfeited their spot in the final of the playoffs. If the outcome is anything different than clearly the league is compromised. period.
it was me i was the man with the phone behind the tree. lmao
“If they prove they only did it once” that’s literally impossible, proving a negative
I don't know how the LAW works, but if the guy from Southampton didn't have a camera or he didn't record anything all he does is just watching how BORRO are training is that illegal?
If Southampton are found guilty, then letting them play at Wembley would make the EFL look spineless.
A fine would be a joke. Promotion is worth hundreds of millions, so a fine just becomes the cost of doing business.
A points deduction next season would also be useless, because it does nothing for Middlesbrough or Hull right now.
The “maybe it didn’t help them” excuse is pathetic. Cheating doesn’t have to work to still be cheating.
And the idea that an intern just randomly ended up watching another club train is very hard to take seriously.
If the rules were broken in the playoffs, the punishment has to hit the playoffs. Anything less tells every club: take the risk, because the reward is bigger than the punishment.
If I was Middlesborough I would still be in training just in case they find themselves going to Wembley
Double standards. Still remember your watford team denying a saints goal with a deliberate handball on the line and robbing us of a place (2 million quid) .. pay up
Ok so lets f$%king get serious about this. What about all the things that represent cheating .. Man City, Chelsea, and other clubs who have made any kind of move (financial manipulation) to maintain their premier league status should immediately have to pay 200 million pounds and be relegated.. its the same benefit from cheating. Not going to do that are they!!!!!
The spy was Benny Hill!!!! Just think it through the incident was so ridiculous it could have only been Benny Hill!!!
Any other problems in the world?
If this has happened once, I think it should be a hefty fine. If its proven by other clubs coming forward and reporting the same thing, with proof, they need to be kicked out.
Agree on the Hull points. They have no clue who they’re playing whilst Southampton will be preparing for Hull already.
Evidence sent to EFL proving they also spied on Bristol City,Millwall and Norwich.
CHEATS should never prosper
Boro vs Hull in final
72hrs – permitted. 71.59 – full scale moral outrage. Get a grip.
8:57 … that’s a bit of a weird analogy
If the info was that valuable then every tea lady to security guard or youth player would be driving a Ferrari
Handballs resulting in goals
Tapping up players
Diving for penalties
Doping
Paying refs for summer work
All are ten times worse than scouting within a 36 hour window of a game
Big fine and all staff involved get an English FA ban, year to lifetime, that's how you stop this rule breaking scouting.
If Southampton are to play the final, they should start one goal down, and if they are completely banned, then Middlesbrough will play at Wembley if the decision is made in this way. Of course, others shouldn't pay the price for someone else's wrongdoing, unless you're forced to. If there's any espionage involved, the football federation is determined to deal with it, but Hull City, who are playing in the final, shouldn't be affected in any way. If this team is affected in any way by this unpleasantness, people might think there are other things behind it. My personal opinion is that Hull City should play in the final regardless of the decision. The Southampton vs Middlesbrough match should be replayed. That would be a fair decision because they also worked hard to get here. Of course, in the end, we can only offer opinions; the authorities will make the real decisions, but my personal opinion is that, as I mentioned earlier, replaying the match would be a very appropriate decision. This match, this final, is very important, and depending on the excitement of the final at Wembley, I think the second logical decision is that Hull should be directly in the Premier League, but since this causes some shortcomings, Southampton should be banned and Middlesbrough should play the final. But the final should start with Hull City 1 Middlesbrough 0. This is how the final should start, as it gives the opposing team a chance. Starting one goal down is better than not starting at all. Southampton will have received their punishment for the mistake they made. This is my second logical decision, of course, I believe the football federation will make a better decision than us.
Get a grip Deeney – it was a guy with his iPhone and earbuds!
This could get farcical. Just give every team Southampton have played in the season a win.Where does it stop. Fulham in next round of FA cup, arsenal then have to play fulham not southampton, arsenal or Fulham have to play city in Semi final etc. This has ability to become a major legal case. Intent is important to establish. Extent of rule breaking, one time or systemic is an important factor, sanctioned by club or not is important to establish, what was gained is a factor, how that could impact any game. Yes punishment is important, a deterrent is important, but it has to be lagal and reasonable or Saints will absolutely be able to defend this which will protract to process. They have a right to due process
02:47 Troy "One Time's Too Many" Deeney… 2011 – guilty of wounding with intent; 2014 – guilty to assault occasioning ABH; 2015 – insulting/abusive behaviour; 2017 – charged with assault by beating (unconvicted).
The funny thing about this whole "Spygate 2.0" hysteria is that if he had done this just a day earlier, it would have been perfectly acceptable under the EFL's arbitrary 72-hour rule.
Let’s look at the facts: the guy was standing in a public place with an iPhone. He wasn’t trespassing, and he has every legal right to film in a public area. People are acting like he broke into the training ground in the dead of night and stole top-secret tactical blueprints. It was an intern with a smartphone, not a highly coordinated espionage operation.
Furthermore, would Boro really be practicing highly sensitive set-pieces—like crucial free kicks and penalties—in plain view of a public area rather than behind closed doors? It’s highly unlikely. Realistically, he probably just went down there to see if their star player was fit and participating in training.
If anything, Kim Hellberg and Middlesbrough have completely overreacted to deflect from the football itself. Let's not forget that Leeds United only received a fine for the original Spygate in 2019, so Boro demanding that Saints be expelled from the playoffs is completely disproportionate and reeks of desperation.
In the end, the "cheat" accusations actually rocked Saints FC and the fans, giving Boro a massive psychological advantage that clearly showed in the first half of the first leg. Despite all the noise, the media circus, and the hostility, Southampton still managed to get the job done on the pitch. The better team won, and no amount of complaining from Boro changes that.
The ‘ how does it affect Hull’ question was like a preplanned long hop delivered right in Troy Deeny’s wheelhouse.
It's so funny how everyone EXCEPT for Man City get timely consequences for their actions…. but when it comes to the team making those executives at the league all this money then suddenly they have SO MANY excuses about how long 115 charges actually takes. When in reality they clearly have shown in the past that it can be done quickly if they want it to. Even if you multiply that amount of time by 115 to account for the charges, it still isn't gonna be as long as it's taken them.
But maybe Southampton, Wednesday, Everton, and others actually cooperated with the investigations where as Man City actively refused to hand over their books to start with (before they'd doctored them, of course the league can have them after that)
Absolutely spot on by Troy, which I can’t say the same for Geoff who kept reiterating a point of ‘if’ Southampton are found guilty and telling Troy he can’t jump to conclusions. Southampton HAVE been found guilty and HAVE been charged by the EFL for breaching the rules. The evidence is there we’ve all seen it and now more will come out, no matter how big or little of an impact it may have made it gained an advantage in some way and is blatant cheating. Anything other than a sporting sanction would be no benefit to the team who was affected most, cheating scum
It’s tacky, classless, low ball, undignified & very stupid of Southampton.
BUT keep it in perspective the Saints achieved two parts of Fxxx All & had NO bearing on the results.
Fine the attempted cheaters at least 10% of what the EPL promotion will earn them. So worth £200,000,000 ergo fine Southampton at least £20,000,000!
Move on, this is boring now.
It only takes years if your chelski or city
Troy Denney is an idiot, why is he given air time?
Rules badly written as usual.
Either Saints play in the final, or you let Hull go up automatically. Saints should get a punishment if guilty, but Boro shouldn’t benefit from it directly. That’s not how punishments work.
If the EFL don’t throw the book at Southampton just scrap the rule all together.
I've seen enough. Deduct 10 points from Everton
They should give hull city the trophy and straight to Premier league as boro cant be there as they lost
I hope the EFL throw the book at Southampton, there is absolutely no room in any sport for cheating to gain an advantage.
Remember when Ben Johnson won 100 meters gold medal and afterwards he was found to have taken PED's, he was stripped of his gold medal and the guy who came second was promoted to gold. They didn't just fine him and let him keep his gold medal did they. Its the same principle,if you cheat,a fine is not enough, the person/team involved faces the strictest penalty to send a message that it is totally unacceptable. You think Southampton will be bothered with a 1 million fine if they get promotion worth 200 million, its pocket money.
Boot southhampton, cancel the final and promote Hull automatically…
Southampton out Middlesbrough in..simple. Anything less is a travesty of justice.
ARSENAL DESERVE TO BE IN THE FA CUP FINAL THEN?! JUST SCRAP THE WHOLE FOOTBALLING SEASON!!
Somebody really needs to make a petition for Troy Deeney to blow his nose.
Troy is a class act
As a Boro fan I want Hull to just go straight up into the Prem. It's not about us getting beat, it's about the integrity shown by Southampton FC. Fair play to Troy Deeney here, 100% correct on this one. Rules are rules, cheating has no place in our game. Let's see what the authorities say? This will absolutely 100% happen again if they are not dealt with severely and given the maximum punishment for this… Blatant cheating from a club with no integrity!
