Andrew Wiebe breaks down the biggest and most controversial calls from around MLS in this week’s episode of Instant Replay.
Did the LA Galaxy get away with a missed DOGSO red card? Was Inter Miami denied a game-winning goal by a razor-thin offside decision? And what about the debated “stamp” in the Philadelphia Union vs. Columbus Crew match – was it really serious foul play?
Plus, we dive into late penalty drama, handball decisions, and more — all explained through the Laws of the Game.

Save the Caps Houston fan
That RSL game looked more fixed than the African lower divisions. Also SAVE THE CAPS
I hate Inter Miami, but why are we chalking off that goal? The AR is supposed to put up the flag when they're CERTAIN right? There's no way he's CERTAIN there. It feels like sometimes we're purposely trying to take goals away. Bruno Caicedo gets the dodgiest hand ball calling off a brilliant second effort goal. Does it hit his arm? Sure, but it's a total fluke while him and the defender are going down so WTF is he supposed to do? Meanwhile Rafa Navarro has a similar goal allowed while he's going down under a challenge, the referee said after the match it his his knee? I have a screenshot that looks a lot like it hitting his arm and it went in off that body part, as opposed to Caicedo who still had to shoot the ball. One gets counted and the other doesn't? If anything they should've been flipped, but failing that they either BOTH should've been goals or no goals. Didn't even get a review.
MLS should not only develop football quality, but much more outside the pitch before bringing it in…
I’m so glad that that “stamp” was not given red, he’s doing everything he can to not touch him and should never be red
Who in the heck is Nate Janequa or whatever? Egregious mistake for a professional video. At least he agreed on the DOGSO non call for RSL. RSL continues to get screwed so often it’s unbelievable. And it’s crazy how obvious it is and still happens regularly.
Do we know what flags the ARs where using?
portland san diego????? could make a whole video on the horrendous officiating in that game.
No red card for Don Garber’s attempting to move the Caps?
Rivas did an awesome job!
5:29 this is a really, really bad miscall. Don’t think a single person can vouch that it is a red card on Larsen.
So many blown calls in PORvsSDFC. Some of the most atrocious officiating and (on the field and VAR) I've seen in awhile, which is saying something.
Allende off by a knee.
Save the Caps|
The Sam Junqua play is the best of the bunch here. It looks like RSL’s confusion came from the delayed whistle – which in turn is a function of letting the play finish.
If LAG scores from the ball ping-ponging around the goal area, Rivas can give advantage and ignore the foul, even one which leads to a penalty. Since the ball instead popped out past the penalty area – to the penalty mark we go.
I’m surprised this wasn’t mentioned. Wiebe and co. are usually very comprehensive about the logistics of officiating.
He looks down to figure out exactly where that foot is and stomps downward with force, putting his foot in an unnatural spot where it otherwise wouldn't have come down. Very obvious red card.
I was at the Crew/Philly game. I initially thought they were looking at the Philadelphia player for simulation. He steps in front of Bangoura and then goes down way too easy. Bangoura was clearly trying to jump over the other player.
Agree again with Columbus attacker was the first offender on the DOGSO.
The "stomping" was correctly seen as incidental. There was nowhere for the Columbus player to put his foot down.
I agree with you on the DOGSO on LA#25. Rivas didn't have the angle, but VAR with a reverse angle should have sent it down.
Nothing from Cincinnati Red Bulls!?
Save the caps
When Victor Rivas ignored the indisputable red-card foul by Amiro Garces it once again put a spotlight on the suspicion that MLS officials are corrupt. What other explanation could there be than sports betting? The total amount at stake for sports betting on clubs in large media markets like LA Galaxy can exceed $1 million per match and more than half of this comes from in-play wagering. MLS only adds to the fears of corruption because it protects Victor Rivas and other MLS officials from jaw-droppingly bad calls by fining players and coaches who would dare criticize such atrocious officiating.
Thats some pic of mastroeni getting angry, 😆
