🔀 POSITIVE SWAPS! Subtle changes in your language, or how you frame parts of your session, can have a huge impact on the environment you create for children.
Take this simple example…! instead of just calling it “the area” or “the grid,” I tell the children they’re playing inside Wembley Stadium.
Straight away, the space becomes exciting, and more interesting. They’re no longer just dribbling around cones, they’re playing on the biggest stage in the world.
Now, let’s say a child dribbles out of the area. Maybe it was a heavy touch, or maybe they didn’t quite catch the instructions I set. Instead of pointing out the mistake or correcting them, I can say:
“The fans are calling your name! Wembley Stadium needs you!”
The child smiles, their head lifts, and they sprint back into the area full of energy. They’re not being corrected, they’re being invited back into the fun. The message lands, but without any feeling of being told off. In fact, it feels like encouragement.
These small swaps in language shift the tone of your coaching. They protect confidence, build imagination, and make your sessions a place where children feel safe to be themselves, even when they make mistakes.
