The Gentleman’s Game – Or Why Jamaica Won’t Qualify for the 2010 World CupA few weeks ago, I went out for a beer with a few friends. We visited an Irish pub and, of course, there was soccer on the tube. Our discussions eventually led us back to, shockingly, soccer. We made a conversational foray into Concacaf qualifying and discussed who the most likely teams to qualify for it were.
Thoughts on Soccer HatersWhen I lived in South Africa, my girlfriend at the time took me to see a cricket match. I got dressed in a nice white shirt and tie, bought a hat at the grounds, and for the rest of the day sat in a shaded box trying to figure out what was going on. The game looked vaguely like baseball, except that there were only two bases, nobody wore mitts, it took nine hours to complete, and the score was expressed in some odd looking fraction that I did not fully grasp. I can’t say that I enjoyed myself, but it was a cultural experience and I did appreciate it on that level. When my girlfriend asked me if I was a cricket convert, I told her, “I didn’t grow up with cricket, I don’t really get it, and I’m not a fan, but I can understand why people like it.”
An American Soccer Fan’s Musings On Mexico – Part IIWith another United States – Mexico matchup on the books, let us take a moment to think about this rivalry in a broader context. I have drawn an interesting mix of criticism and praise for my suggestion that, at least right now, the Mexican side seems better than the American team. The United States has managed to dominate the series of late, in large measure because the American side has taken a more intelligent and calm approach to the rivalry. The Mexican players are more likely to boast unnecessarily, to commit foolish fouls, and to otherwise show the signs of a team under much greater pressure to win without the emotional resources to overcome its fans lofty expectations.

Overpriced FootballersDenilson de Oliveira Araújo popularly known as Denilson is a Brazilian midfielder that rose to prominence for his display at Le Tournoi just before the 1998 world cup in France. He was noted for his numerous step-overs and on account of this Real Betis saw it fit to splash out £21m for his services. It turned out to be a huge waste of money as they actually managed to get relegated and he scored just 12 goals in 165 appearances for the club.

Avram Grant Is Not Yet “The Special One”Ever since he was appointed manager of Chelsea following the shock parting of ways between the club and Jose Mourinho, Avram has told anyone that cared to listen that he intended to play the “right way”. He means of course that his team would be more expansive in their play with emphasis on attacking play. It was a dig at the efforts of Jose Mourinho possibly from those above like Roma Abramovic and Peter Kenyon to undermine Jose’s achievements.
