Danny Murphy, Sol Bamba, Darren Lewis and Oliver Holt join Geoff Shreeves for a special edition of The Debate on the media’s role in tackling racism.
After the alleged racial abuse of Raheem Sterling by Chelsea supporters at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, the panel tackle a wide range of issues surrounding racism in football.
Figures from the professional game – Bamba and Murphy – and two of the country’s leading journalists – Lewis and Holt – examine the impact of Sterling’s response to the incident and what the next steps are for the football world.

Racism is definitely wrong. However if I was getting paid as much as these are you could call me anything you could dream of.
Football is a mess prosecute fan and club
Holt says some dumb sh*t on social media and is often corrected. Not abused. Corrected. He makes stuff up or reports speculation as fact then can't handle when people take him down a peg or two. He's a terrible journalist and works for the most hate-filled and racism-fueling paper in the country. Nobody takes him seriously.
You can't Europe is white and they hate things that are different then them and with how aggressive football is. That aggression will turn into racism.
I was eleven years old when I wrote my first ever letter to the Norwegian Supporters Club Norway's fanzine "The Kopite" – and it was about my disgust with Bob Paisley saying black players were lazy, and that none of them were good enough to play for Liverpool F.C. 182, I think.
I was thinking (an writing): "Right. Is that right? Would PelΓ©, Garrincha or Eusebio not be good enough to play for Liverpool in the 1960s? I seriously doubt it. I also think Paisley would."
By dishing it back! When you see white players throw mayonnaise packets on the field.
Anyone know the name of the intro song?
Morata is just bad goalscorer…
Lukaku is just…lazy….lazy black player…so what
How many white player that better than Mbappe, Aubameyang or Raheem Sterling ?
I agree about everything, but the lazy part. I think he over interprets the implications of the word lazy when used to describe footballers. If you argued that it's used more against foreign players (e.g. ozil) then I would have to agree
Dickhead Holt's got some bottle for coming on. Still a scumbag
Judas "Soros" and mass immigration are a main factor in societies mentality and how they have rightfully reacted to there country and nationalities becoming eradicated thus you get racism . Media love to blow things out of proportion too half a million quid a week to play football, time for all of these overpaid whiners to toughen up and concentrate on what your paid to do on pitch best job in the world and they can't take a few taunts from some dumbass fans in the stand, maybe Cantona should return and give these overpaid divas some advice!
Quick, quick… get some journos together (and some black people, yeah definitely need a token black person!!) and let's get a full video out on youtube to show that we're not part of the media agenda against black people! Make sure you praise Raheem Sterling… despite having slagged the guy off for years for tattoos, cars, houses, barbershops… talk about Deontay Wilder… mention Civil Rights… any black footballer you can think of… yeah that'll do lads.
That's what I call a discussion Black and White talking about race. Well done men.
Not to undermine racism against our young black players, but is it only me, but are Asians forgotten when It comes football and racism.
When was the last time you saw an British Asian footballer play for England? No actually an British Asian footballer? British Asian manager? There seriously needs to be a conversation about this too.
The panel of moral elites here, who are not debating and who unanimously agree with each other, have literally no idea how snobby they are. they think they are entitled to tell other people, who are their own sovereign agency what to believe, how to think and be 'civilised'. That kind or arrogance which is not even deliberate such is its extent, is an example of civilisational decay and is ruining democracy. Revolting panel of pathetic people I severely hate them all.
Its odd that these people all agree, its almost like its not actually a debate at all…
What original opinions. Footballers and football journalists are pathetic and out of their depth talking about these issues. They don't have opinions of their own but just echo what it is they think, they are supposed to think in accord with the demands of a PC culture they don't realise they are useful idiots in serving. Its pathetic.
If more people follow the edict – treat others the way you'd expect others to treat you – the world would be a better place.
When this issue comes up I always remember shaka hislop's story of when he started receiving racial abuse by a bunch of kids one day when he was out until they recognised who he was and then they were all asking for his autograph. And he gave them the autographs.
Sol Bamba talks a lot of sense on this issue.
The problem is people complain about racism but when the discussion is brought up itβs amongst the least viewed videos produced. People should have more interest regarding topics that could change society but it all seems to be just noise.
No one can cure racism its a cancer.!
Racism can go both ways but in the UK and Europe I don't think Racism affects white people, they are the majority in that part of the world, they are not victims and because of this they don't know how to handle the problem. Sadly this is a society issue.
Racism will always be around unfortunately, not just in football, there's not much you can do it all starts with education.
What do you mean, "How do we", who is we!
Racism and any kind of prejudgement is a result of lack of education and instruction starting with the parents since the process of learning starts at home. This is the only way to make the mankind to evolute spiritually.
They are trotting out a well intentioned but ultimately intolerant view on racism, which I am hearing over and over in the media in reaction to the abuse Raheem Sterling suffered . Racism will not be defeated by making it a crime or a social stigma to say certain words. This just drives the racism underground as it prevents an open conversation taking place. Racism is about discrimination and not words, and would be dealt with far better through improved education and if everyone did not get so offended about the use of particular words. Ultimately, the way to treat this is (1) give everyone an understanding of what racism is – how it feels etc, and (2) making sure that ethnic minorities get a fair crack of the whip like the white majority.
Excellent video .
The video with the least amount of views on the channel hahah people come to see and hear football not lessons about racism
Kaperanic? Get the name right first π
Nothing will change coz this has been indoctrinated into generation after generation from centuries of colonial rule that white is superior to anything else.
This is why racists will never change when you have Danny Murphy taking about this. Shame he doesn't talk about how he lit the match..
Why is it ok when I call a white person monkey but if you call a black person monkey then it's somehow so much worse? Can't anyone see the hypocrisy? When I say Oli Kahn was a monkey, everyone is fine with it, but when I say Raheem is a monkey then everyone loses their mind!
We love u Raheem we love ALL black people
Mo Bamba
At 46:26 couldn't help but think "what like the England captain who racially abused an opponent and the media went into overdrive to defend"
Why just in football? why not in society?
despicatble
Start by NOT asking how to stamp it out in football. Dya think it DOESN'T happen outside football stadium???
The inside of the stadium is governed by the same laws as the outside, so EVERY time a law is broken, PROSECUTE.
It's the POLICE/CPS responsibility to sort this out, not the club or the FA… and if that means you have to go after every one on the Kop/Stretford End/Etc, so be it.
this isnt football problem…its a society problem…you have celebrity panel and dabating racism….bring in a regular citizen to these kind of debate.
A lot of good views made. If you disagree then you need to open your mind
I agree with some points however I've called the likes of Gerrard, Lampard, Shearer (just to name a few) as absolute beasts. I used to model my game when I was younger on who I thought was the original "beast" in Duncan Ferguson.
So let me get this straight, Murdoch tv empire and Mail on Sunday wants to end racism! I'm dead π
Have only ever used the word beast in football as a compliment to any player who is performing exceptionally, no matter what their race, nationality, skin colour, height, weight, sex, religion or food preference is. Would hate for the word to be considered as negative word that is frowned upon. Just use it for everyone if they are performing exceptionally.
