STORYLINE:
Members of the Black Unified Movement on Thursday demonstrated in Rio de Janeiro in support of Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior, who has faced repeated racist abuse in the Spanish soccer league.
On Sunday’s match, he again endured racial slurs.
Holding signs, they chanted and marched through downtown streets saying Vinicius Jr. was not alone.
“Vinicius was a warrior, he’s being a warrior, right? For enduring this since he arrived there in Spain and always taking a stand. But this time he’s not alone. He is with us, he is with the Brazilian people, with Black people from all over the world,” said the Black Movement activist Valda Neves.
The case prompted widespread reaction from sports figures and government officials in Spain and worldwide.
Vinicius, who is Black, has been subjected to repeated racist taunts since he arrived in Spain five years ago and especially this season after he began celebrating his goals by dancing.
The Brazilian has heavily criticized Spanish soccer for not doing more to stop racism.
