Did you know why players’ names on German club jerseys are placed below the number? Originally, names on jerseys appeared in American football in the 1960s. The pioneers were the Los Angeles Chargers. In normal football, the idea of names didn’t catch on right away. One of the first to try it was AC Milan, but they encountered rule-related issues. At the time, in major leagues, teams could only play with numbers from one to eleven. This meant either the lineup couldn’t change, or new names constantly had to be printed, which was costly. Germany found a solution to this problem. Instead of printing player names on the back, they decided to print the name of the club or city. But in the ’90s, the rules changed, and players started keeping one number for the entire season, which led to names being added to jerseys. However, in the Bundesliga, they decided to keep the club name above, so player names were printed below the number, symbolizing that the club is more important than any footballer.
