Canada defeated Mexico, needing penalties to win 4-3 in the shootout after the match finished 4-4 in regular time.
Rosa Aguiar scored the opening goal in the 2’ with a right-footed shot. She secured a brace and the second goal with a left-footed strike in the 14’, becoming the top-goal scorer for Mexico in the W Futsal Championship. Ariatna Dorantes sent a one-time volley to the back of the net in the 18’ to send Mexico with a three-goal lead into halftime.
Canada pulled one back in the 22’ after Jade Houmphanh intercepted the ball to strike with her first goal of the campaign. Cynthia Gaspar-Freire closed the gap with Canada’s second goal in the 23’.
Esther Brossard equalized for The Canucks in the 24’ with a right-footed finish. Canada took the lead for the first time in the 27’ as Brossard earned her brace.
Rubi Gomez found the Mexican equalizer in the 40’, with a hit off the volley to send the match to extra time. Nothing would separate the teams in the additional periods, requiring a penalty shootout to decide the last spot in the final.
Canada was victorious from the spot kicks, with Gaspar-Freire striking the winning kick, to complete its comeback and advance to the Final on Sunday.
