Personally, I believe it’s essential for young players to try a variety of roles in grassroots football:
– Throw them into the chaos of midfield, where quick thinking under pressure is key.
– Let them play out wide as a winger, creating width and taking on defenders 1v1.
– Give them time up front as a striker, learning how to play with their back to goal and hold the ball up.
– Drop them into defence, where they can see the whole game in front of them and develop their ability to read play.
– And don’t forget goalkeeper – it offers a completely different view and set of challenges.
Each position builds unique skills, techniques, and tactical understanding.
The more experiences they have, the more complete and adaptable they’ll become.
